Outstanding Involvement and Effectiveness in the Fight Against AIDS:

Following a visit to Lesotho in April 2006 by Pastor Dean Curry, along with local community and government leaders, Life Center created The Global Neighbor Project and, essentially, has "adopted" Sekameng, a region of Lesotho where, because of AIDS, the average life expectancy is 34 years. It is estimated that AIDS will orphan one out of every five children in this nation in less than three years. The church's efforts include engaging the Tacoma area to focus financial resources-"with intensity"-on this nation that has been devastated by the pandemic. Since launching the Global Neighbor Project in October 2006, the congregation has raised more than $70,000 and through collaborations with a local symphony and other local community organizations, the project is expected to raise an additional $150,000. The funds are being directed to an international organization working in Lesotho to help turn the tide against AIDS, as well as provide care for orphans and vulnerable children.

Impact on the Congregation:

The Global Neighbor Project has enlightened members of Life Center about the brutal reality of the pandemic and, in particular, the devastation it has created in one region in a nation wracked by AIDS. Moreover, it has been a powerful and sobering lesson about the members' obligation as Christians to get involved. The leadership of the church believes that Africa is in the midst of a critical hour of terrible need and that members can and must offer practical help and the hope of Jesus' message.

Pastor's Quote: "This award represents a critical opportunity for the church to get vocal and active in the fight against AIDS-and to let the world know that Jesus came to help the suffering. May that message truly be heard and felt in the dark places around the world."

Comment from the Judges: "Scripture's continued refrain is that we are to do life in community and showcase the splendor of God's handiwork in all that we come together to do. Life Center has given witness to the endless possibilities of this spiritual truth in the power of a community united for a community in need."
