Outstanding Involvement and Effectiveness in the Fight Against AIDS:
Through an American missionary who joined Stellenbosch in 2003, this church launched its AIDS ministry in a poor community with needs ranging from HIV-prevention education, to clean water, sanitation, and a myriad of other needs. The church created the Legacy Community Development Corporation, a non-profit organization committed to serving the community of Kayamandi.
The foundation of the work—literally and figuratively—is the Legacy Centre in Kayamandi. It is from this multifunctional community hall that Stellenbosch has created a wide range of programs, including children's clubs, literacy programs, parenting education services, a garden for fresh fruits and vegetables, a health clinic with a volunteer physician from the congregation, job skills workshops and, of course, care, education, and other services for those infected with or otherwise impacted by HIV. The Legacy Centre is a safe place for HIV support groups and the location where anti-stigma efforts in the community are undertaken.
As a result of Stellenbosch's efforts, the rate of HIV disclosure has increased and the stigma associated with HIV is eroding.
Impact on the Congregation:
About 25 volunteers every week work in the Kayamandi community—tutoring, counseling, organizing outings, delivering medical care, conducting Bible studies, and other services. The members of this church have shattered barriers that existed between the wealthier members of this community who comprise much of the congregation and the people living in Kayamandi. Differences in language and culture, as well as a fear of crime have been bridged.
Pastor's Quote: “Our dream and challenge is to help create a new culture—one of hope, joy and a sense of family. This is a slow process—an organic one—‘watering' and waiting to see what grows—to see where we can join Jesus.”
Comments from the Judges: “Stellenbosch Gemeente has recognized the importance of joining their efforts with that of other churches, university leadership, and regional and government associations. By networking effectively with a variety of resourcing agents in their region, they have created a response that is strategic, holistic, and effective.”
