Sophia's Choice: determination over despair

girl cares for her mother Sponsored child Kombo Mketha Hamsi, 8, and his mother Amina, 20, live in Maungu, Kenya, a town in the World Vision Canada-funded Voi ADP. Located on the Mombasa Road-a major cross-country trucking route-this community has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in Kenya. Amina sustained brain damage during an auto accident as a child. She is divorced and is supported by her mother, Sophia, who runs a small roadside restaurant. As Kombo's guardian, Sophia gave written permission for World Vision to publish the fact that Kombo is HIV+. Kombo is quite ill and suffers from many HIV-related opportunistic diseases such as respiratory infections. World Vision is supplying supplementary food for Kombo each month. World Vision has also constructed a health center in the ADP in partnership with the community.
